People planning on going backpacking should ensure they have the right travel insurance cover and make sure they avoid taking expensive items, according to an expert.

A spokesperson for Trailfinders said that a backpacker is a "very different type of traveller" to others so need different types of cover, according to Car Rentals.

The company pointed out that people on this kind of trip are often spending time in remote places, using local transport and eating local foods which could all contribute to the risk involved.

Trailfinders was commenting on research from the AA showing that the average backpacker had £450 worth of possessions with them during their trip including phones and MP3s.

A poll recently showed that backpackers from London were the most likely group to be a victim of theft while abroad. Of the 1,216 surveyed, those people from Greater London were most likely to be stolen from, according to the Press Association.
