Those planning extended trips away should make sure they have taken out an appropriate travel insurance policy, as well as packing only the essential valuables, it has been advised.

Advice resource Trailfinders notes that recent research has found the average backpack to contain around £450 worth of goods - highlighting the need for a robust policy.

Recent suggestions from the company include choosing an insurance policy that is based on individual travel requirements.

A spokesperson from the firm explains that savings can be made if travellers inform their providers that they only hold valuables of limited cost in their luggage.

However, consumers also need to look at the range of cover available, as backpacking can require unconventional cover for things such as a 24-hour medical assistance helpline.

Concluding, he states: "The big piece of advice is that a backpacker shouldn't pick their policy based on price alone, they need to pick it on the quality of what they're going to get."

InsureandGo offers tailored backpacker insurance policies to suit the needs of individual travellers.
