More Brits are jetting off to foreign destinations because of the poor state of British beaches, a new survey has revealed.
Some families could be taking out
travel insurance and escaping the UK in order to avoid dirty beaches.
Research carried out as part of Corona's Save the Beach initiative showed that 74 per cent of people believe British beaches to be dirty and as a result, 46.6 per cent of travellers were deterred from visiting them.
However, Jenny McGee, head of strategy and communications at VisitEngland, disputed this and argued that the UK's "stunning coastline" remains an important attraction for those looking to holiday in the UK.
She commented: "This year is officially one of the best on record for the quality of England's beaches, offering a great opportunity to people looking for a low-cost, stress-free way of taking a break in the coming months."
According to the Marine Conservation Society's Good Beach Guide 2009, 377 of 777 (47.5 per cent) beaches that were tested this year achieved the organisation's recommendation.
InsureandGo offers travel insurance for those heading off on a domestic break.
