A planned strike by baggage handlers and check-in staff over the Bank Holiday weekend has been called off, according to a report.
Workers at Stansted and Gatwick were planning to strike over pay, but it has been suspended while a ballot takes places on a new pay offer made yesterday, as reported on Travel Weekly.
The worker's unions were apparently looking for a five per cent pay offer along with the withdrawal of a new company proposal meaning staff may not be paid sickness pay for the first three days of an illness.
A three per cent pay offer has already been rejected and a new offer made after 12 hours of talks at Acas arbitration service yesterday.
A spokesman for union Unite said: "A baggage handler could sustain an injury at work and be denied sick pay. Our members are upset."
The strike would have affected Thomsonfly, First Choice Airways, Monarch, Virgin, Ryanair and easyJet.
In related news, a further strike at Stansted will still go ahead. Up to 30 baggage scanning workers will strike next week over pay, according to a report in the Times.
According to the Times newspaper, an estimated 320,000 will fly in and out of Stansted over the Bank Holiday weekend.
