Barcelona is one of the most popular destinations for UK tourists, and it is convincing cheap air travel companies to push prices down, Holidays Direct has commented.

According to travel website travelmole, 70,000 Brits will fly with easyJet this week to the Catalan city, a ten per cent year-on-year increase and the airline's top-selling destination.

And the Telegraph recently reported that the National Consumer Council had priced a one week break in Barcelona at £518, cheaper than the same break would be in the UK's own city of Blackpool.

"Barcelona's popularity has continued to grow over recent years, and this is reflected in the increased number of low cost airlines flying there from regional airports across the UK. We have seen this number increase year on year," said Neil Smillie, head of Holidays Direct.

Barcelona's appeal to many different travellers, from art lovers to sports fanatics or those looking simply for good food and a relaxing break, is another of the reasons the city has remained so popular, Mr Smillie argued.
