Brits planning a home improvement project this year are likely to focus on the bathroom, it has been claimed.

Speaking at the Totally DIY show at the Birmingham NEC, Matthew Piner, retail analyst at Verdict Research, said the bathroom is most likely to the be the room that receives the most DIY attention in the months ahead.

He commented: "Heading into 2010, the big area of growth is likely to be bathrooms. It is something that is currently quite under capacity and there is a lot of [market] share there for DIY retailers to move into."

According to Andrew Skipwith, founder and chief executive officer at Rated People, more Brits are choosing to rent property rather than purchase their own home at present because of a lack of affordable lending and this in turn could have an adverse impact on the amount of DIY projects that are undertaken this year.

He did note, however, that lenient landlords would let tenants carry out DIY projects on their rented property, although this activity could prove to be limited.
