Alessandra Pitocchi, communications manager at Turismo Bergamo, said the town offers beautiful views and is growing in popularity as more people learn about it - with UK travellers already making up 12.2 per cent of tourists to the region.
He commented: "Bergamo town has a unique Italian panorama with its division of two levels: the upper town is surrounded by walls and is the only one in our country settled on the top of a hill."
Elsewhere in Italy, people looking for a cultural getaway might be interested to learn a new exhibition charting the history of South American civilisation is opening in Brescia on Friday (December 4th).
The Inca: Origins and Mysteries of the Golden Civilisation is taking place at Santa Giulia museum and will feature a number of displays including Mayan and Inca items from the 15th century BC.
