One of Europe's most prestigious arts festivals begins tonight as the Berlin International Film Festival gets underway.
Over the next ten days, cinematography will dominate the capital with 373 screenings on 50 cinemas across the city.
But the festival is not just a chance to catch some the world's most innovative flicks; international stars on the red carpet, hot debates, top promotions and wild parties will also be staged to add to the carnival atmosphere.
In the past, Roman Polanski, Ingmar Bergman, Jean-Luc Godard and Claude Chabrol have all enjoyed great success at the festival, now in its 57th year.
The grand opening tonight will be shown live on national television and will be attended by just about everyone who is anyone of the German screen. Following the introduction of the international jury, the Berlinale Palast at Potsdamer Platz will screen the world premiere of La Vie en Rose by Olivier Dahan.
Some 180,000 tickets have already been sold so fans of European cinema are urged to book as soon as possible.
