The world's islands that are best coping with the threat of tourism overkill have been identified.
A new study by National Geographic Traveller identifies which isle locations are making the most of sustainable tourism and which are most at risk of overdevelopment.
Some 111 islands and archipelagos were examined by a panel of 522 experts.
Denmark's Faroe Islands topped the list, followed by the Azores.
Joint third place was taken by the Shetland Islands, Norway's Lofoten and Chiloe off Chile.
The joint lowest ranking locations were St Thomas in the US Virgin Islands and Ibiza.
Criteria that the destinations were judged on included environmental and ecological quality, aesthetic appeal, condition of historic buildings and archaeological sites, social and cultural integrity and outlook for the future.
Consumers wishing to visit any of the islands as part of a backpacking holiday may find that
