Drivers are being advised to prepare for fog this month, after the Met Office has predicted a high risk of the weather condition in coming weeks.

Insurance firm RIAS has issued a number of tips for motorists who will be travelling in this potentially dangerous driving hazard.

Janet Connor, managing director of the company, stated that while many drivers are aware of the risks of driving in severe rain and snow, they may not be aware of fog-related dangers.

"Driving in busy traffic on a clear day is challenging enough, but you should be extra careful when driving in fog as visibility can seriously deteriorate in a matter of minutes - or metres," she added.

Advice from RIAS includes using windscreen wipers and demisters to help see what is on the road, keeping a safe distance from vehicles in front in case they have to make an emergency stop and taking a mobile phone for emergencies, but not using it while driving.

In fact, drivers were recently warned that they may have to foot the bill of repairs to their own car if they crash while using a mobile phone.
