A spokes person for the British Insurance Brokers' Association (Biba) has announced that improved vehicle insurance enforcement methods mean that it is more difficult to own an uninsured car.
Graeme Trudgill, technical and corporate affairs executive for Biba, explains that new legislation makes it illegal to own an uninsured car.
By law, car owners without insurance must declare it off the road or face penalties.
New continuous insurance enforcement legislation is able to cross-reference information on vehicle registration databases with
car insurance records and penalise car owners without a policy, he explains.
The law will be accompanied by a joint publicity campaign by Biba and the department for transport to raise awareness among car owners of the dangers of driving without insurance.
Uninsured drivers cost vehicle owners an average of £30 per year on their insurance premiums.
