The British Insurance Broker's Association (Biba) has dismissed calls by Irish cheap flight operator Ryanair to change policy on travel insurance.

Ryanair last week called for travel insurance to be differentiated depending on the airline that passengers used.

It argued that, on issues of baggage handling, it had a better record than other airlines and their passengers should not be penalised.

But on Tuesday Biba's head of technical services Peter Staddon said the idea was 'not really feasible' and the cost and logistics of the whole system would be 'absolutely huge'.

'If Ryanair thinks it is a good idea they do offer insurance because there are lots of distribution channels, the brokers, direct and of course through the airlines, then let them put it together,' Mr Staddon told BBC Radio 4's You and Yours programme.

Recent worries over increases in lost or delayed luggage has led to airlines increasingly trying to better their credentials in this area.

Ryanair has now launched a free 'Check 'n' Go' check-in service that the airline says will allow passengers carrying only hand luggage to circumvent airport queues.
