Airline bmi, Heathrow's second largest carrier, will be opening a new destination and making enhancements to its services to the Middle East from October of this year.

The airline is set to open a new service to Cairo later this year, which will see daily flights to the Egyptian capital.

The Cairo service will likely be in partnership with EgyptAir, where the two airlines will share frequent flyer mile programmes and reciprocal code share.

New flights will also be added on October 28th, increasing the frequency of the daily services to the Jordanian capital of Amman and the Lebanese capital of Beirut.

"The introduction of new competition onto routes has historically invigorated markets and we expect our new competitive service from Heathrow to the Egyptian capital of Cairo to appeal to both leisure and business travellers alike," said Nigel Turner, bmi chief executive officer.

According to Mr Turner, the new flights, as well as the integration of the former BMED network into bmi will mean the largest expansion the company has undertaken in a single action.

Once the expansion is underway, bmi will service 36 different destinations from Heathrow at the start of the winter timetable.
