The process of insuring individual body parts is relatively uncommon and has only limited market potential, an expert explains.

Peter Staddon, head of technical services for the British Insurance Brokers' Association, said that such services were normally only used by people whose profession was dependent on their physical fitness, such as footballers or artists.

Tradespeople such as carpenters or sculptors may well also benefit from such a policy, but otherwise Mr Staddon concluded that they are normally only used by celebrities and people whose fame is reliant on their bodily assets.

"It's a sort of trademark for people. Think of the supermodel Naomi Campbell - obviously her body is her trade," he explained.

A recent Telegraph report comments that Betty Grable was one of the first celebrities to insure a body part, with her studio taking out an extensive policy on each of her legs during the height of her fame.

Other celebrities who have taken out similar policies include Frank Sinatra, Richard Burton, Eric Clapton, Michael Schumacher and David Beckham - who has many separate policies to cover various parts of his body.

InsureandGo offers extensive life insurance policies that cover a range of incidences of personal injury.
