A long-standing tradition of heavy drinking while on holiday is having a negative impact on local people's perception of tourists from the UK.

Such is the assertion of Bob Atkinson, representative for Travelsupermarket.com, who has said that while there are many Britons who do an excellent job of creating a positive image of the UK while abroad, a contingent of heavy-drinkers that are earning their country a bad reputation.

"Where we fall down is we drink too much, we are certainly known for not handling our drink and we are also known for fuelling major hotspots of young kids getting off their faces," he suggested.

The rising number of people taking stag and hen parties abroad often does not help to ameliorate this negative image in the eyes of local residents overseas, he suggested.

However, he commended the large number of expats and committed travellers who present the UK in a positive light.

Mr Atkinson's comments follow a recent report by Expedia that found that while Britons are no longer considered the world's worst tourists, they are still firmly in the top five.

InsureandGo offers tourists robust travel insurance cover to suit the requirements of their holiday.
