A growing number of tourists have visited Borneo in recent years, especially the sultanate of Brunei, it has been reported.
Especially popular with visitors from China, Germany, Italy and the UK, the region sees many tourists come on package group tours during their country's long holiday seasons.
The Borneo Bulletin notes that figures from the Royal Regalia information desk in the state capital, Bandar Seri Begawan, indicate that in 2004 some 65,493 tourists were recorded as visiting Brunei.
By 2006, this number had risen to 84,049 and in the nine-month period ending September 2007 there have already been almost 70,000 foreign visitors to the region - meaning a further increase in tourist numbers may be likely.
Brunei gained its independence from the UK in January 1984.
