The parents of a child in the US who attempted to drive himself to school may find that now is an ideal time to check their car insurance is up to date.

The six-year-old boy from Virginia took the keys for his family car and tried to drive to school after missing the bus.

He managed to travel for around ten miles before hitting a telephone pole, but escaped any injury other than a bump to the head.

Small bumps and crashes can actually be costly to put right, so motorists should make sure that their car insurance covers them for such incidents to reduce the impact on their pocket.

Sergeant Tom Cunningham said that the boy eventually got to school after lunch.

According to reports, the boy was anxious not to miss breakfast and school, as well as his PE lesson.
