The tourism industry in Brazil is "booming" as the country enjoys a 134 per cent increase in the sector, it has been reported.

And the country's government is keen to reach a target of some nine million tourists each year, according to 4Hoteliers.

Demand for short-term rentals due to the increased number of people visiting the region has resulted in a number of developments and resorts being constructed, the website reports, notably in the regions of Maceio and Natal.

Oziel Oliveira, mayor of Luis Eduardo Magalhaes, told the site that foreign investment would be used to improve infrastructure in the area.

"As a tourist's playground, the rental potential of property in Brazil is tremendous, due to the year-round market," he added.

Those wishing to visit countries in South America such as Brazil - especially in its summer which runs from December to February - while backpacking may find that they can ensure that their needs are met through specific backpacker insurance from InsureandGo.
