Brighton and Hove Council is teaming up with VisitBritain to promote Brighton as the gay capital of the UK, it has been revealed.

Judith Manson, fundraising and communications manager at Pride in Brighton and Hove, said local officials want to make the city synonymous with gay pride and hope to attract thousands of new visitors from both the UK and abroad through its new ad campaign.

She commented: "The city is a Mecca for creative people and there is something going on almost every month to attract visitors. Of course having the largest free Pride event in the country really helps."

According to Brighton and Hove City Council, the local economy was measured at £408 million in 2006, generated by around eight million visitors per annum, 6.5 million of these being day visitors.

Furthermore, the council noted up to 6,100 local jobs are supported by the tourism sector in the city.
