Despite recent projections that 13 million adults will be obese by 2010, LV= has reported that there is an average of £1,132 worth of sports accessories and equipment in UK homes.
However, the firm points out that much of it remains unused and is often left "gathering dust".
Among other items, the company identified that there were £10.4 billion worth of golf clubs in UK homes. The total value of all sporting equipment was around £23 billion.
Emma Holyer, spokesperson for LV=
home insurance, said: "It's easy to forget how much it would cost to replace the sporting equipment you have, unless you consider each item carefully and add up the total cost."
She advised property-owners to inform their
home insurance providers of the value of any sports equipment in their houses to make sure they are adequately covered for the cost of replacement.
UK retirement information firm Mabels also advises home-owners to get in touch with their insurance companies to discuss the value of their home and its contents to make sure the most accurate cover is provided.
InsureandGo offers
home insurance policies that provide a range of coverage options to suit the value of customers' homes and their contents.
