Many tourists who have visited Britain in the past return due to its diversity of attractions, it has been suggested.

The national tourism agency Visit Britain has commented that the country's wealth of history, heritage and culture proved popular among foreign tourists.

Sian Brenchley, senior press officer at the organisation, said: "England is a great place for both domestic and international visitors to holiday.”

Ms Brenchley noted that tourism is the UK's fifth largest industry and is worth in excess of £85 billion.

She also responded to the recent publication of a new edition of the Rough Guide to England in which residents are characterised as being "overweight, binge-drinking reality TV addicts" as being "very tongue-in-cheek".

According to figures from the Office for National Statistics, there were 32.8 million foreign visitors to the UK during the 12 month period up to March 2008.

Between January and March of this year, overseas tourists spent £4 billion while on holiday in Britain.

InsureandGo offers travel insurance options for those planning holidays within the UK and further afield.
