There are many reasons to visit the UK from overseas or travel within the country, with its rich heritage and wealth of cultural attractions luring many visitors, according to UKinbound.
Stephen Dowd, chief executive of the British tourism consortium, said that the UK also offers a wide range of activities that suit everyone.
"A lot of the secondary cities are becoming very popular now because of low cost carriers ... It tends to be relatively [well] priced as well so it is a growing facet of the market," he continued.
The Association of Leading Visitor Attractions lists some of the most popular tourist destinations within the UK. It reports that in 2007, some 5.5 million people visited Blackpool Pleasure Beach, while the Natural History Museum attracted around 3.6 million.
Other prominent London attractions included Saint Paul's Cathedral and the Houses of Parliament, while Chester Zoo and Leeds Castle proved popular further north.
