British parents are increasingly worried about the security of their young children and willing to spend greater amounts on safety measures, a survey by Halifax has revealed.

The traditional baby monitor is increasingly going out the window, with one in 20 parents considering replacing it with a CCTV system to keep an eye on the security of their children.

It is not the only major expense parents are willing to undergo to have the best for their newborn children, with parents in some UK regions spending close to £5,000 on a proper nursery.

The national average is £2,628 according to the report, resulting in a total of £1.8 billion every year.

And one in five children under the age of three now has a television in their nursery, sometimes these being the latest high-end plasma sets.

"The new baby boom is all about the amount parents are spending to ensure their children start life in a luxury home nursery," said Vicky Emmott, senior manager of underwriting at Halifax.

"Expectant parents bringing thousands of pounds of new items into the home should check their home insurance policy to ensure they have adequate cover," she advised.
