Tourists from the UK are holidaying outside the eurozone according to monthly currency sale statistics.

Figures from the Post Office reported in the Telegraph show that sales of Turkish lira and the Egyptian pound went up last month - lira 22.9 per cent and the pound 26.9 per cent.

Sales of the Malaysian ringgit and the Slovakian and Bulgarian currencies have also seen a rise.

Over the last three years, sales of the Bulgarian lev have risen by 126 per cent and Post Office spokeswoman Christine Ball told the newspaper they expect mid-haul holiday destinations to continue to be popular because of the cheaper price and lower charges for fuel.

The Olympics in Beijing have also affected the currency sales market, with the Chinese yuan seeing a 30 per cent rise in sales in July, according to the Telegraph.

According to figures published on Euro Topic from the World Tourism Organisation, 484 million people went abroad either within or to Europe last year.

They claim 155 million travelled to western Europe, with 80 million apparently going to France, the world's most popular destination according to the WTO.
