Thousands of British tourists fled Mexico or began preparations as the country is set to be hit by Hurricane Dean.

The hurricane had previously passed through the Caribbean and territories such as Jamaica, having already been responsible for up to a dozen casualties.

The US government recently upgraded the storm to a Category 5, the highest possible.

Those that remained will have to stack up on resources and make their way to the official shelters set up to protect from the winds of close to 260 km/h that the hurricane will cause.

But according to the Federation of Tour Operators (FTO) about 3,000 tourists had already evacuated the popular tourist resort of Cancun ahead of the hurricane's arrival.

More than 5,000 British tourists remain in the area, and were advised to leave as soon as possible by the Foreign Office.

And travel to Jamaica and Mexico is currently advised against until further notice.
