British tourists are often failing to take advantage of the many impressive holiday hotspots available throughout the UK, a tourist body has claimed.

A spokesperson for VisitBritain has said that many people overlook the UK as a tourist destination because of readily-available cheap flights abroad.

Elliot Frisby, corporate PR manager for the agency, said that because of last year's poor tourism trade, people should look to take advantage of domestic holiday opportunities to support the UK market.

Tourism is Britain's fifth largest industry and is worth £85 billion. Over 2.1 million people are employed in the sector throughout the country, comprising 7.7 per cent of the national workforce.

Mr Frisby said that British Tourism Week, which takes place from March 10th - 18th, will be a particularly good time to take a domestic break.

"We want people to be talking about Britain and British tourism during that week as we head towards the Easter and summer holidays," he said.
