Last weekend would have been the quietest time to take a trip around Britain as most people would have been abroad, according to the AA.
The second Saturday of August is the most popular with Britons to travel abroad on holiday, the study by the AA showed.
Many Britons like to take their holidays to tailor with the long August bank holiday and just before the start of the school term, explaining the popularity of these August dates.
It was estimated that about two million Britons would have travelled abroad last weekend.
And Spain remains the top choice for the record number of travellers leaving the UK, drawing around 14 million visitors from the country every year.
France was the second most popular choice at 12 million, while Ireland was third at 4 million, suggesting that Britons prefer to stay close to home when leaving.
Britons are also increasingly spending more on their holidays abroad, more than £500 a week according to research by Marks & Spencer quoted by the Guardian.
Christian Young of the AA also argued that the recent rains and floods have given a further boost to Britons looking to get abroad.
