Many British people often mislead insurers about their health and state of mind when they complete application forms, it has been revealed.
A total of seven per cent of Brits have purchased insurance having misled companies in a bid to lower premium costs, the study by AXA found.
The poll uncovered that a quarter of men have lied about their alcohol intake and 11 per cent of women have stretched the truth about their weight, possibly in a bid to get cheaper
life insurance premiums.
Iain Mallon, head of protection at AXA said: "Most people quite rightly assume that insurance premiums are based on medical history.
"What people wrongly assume is that these ... typical medical conditions are based on that of a perfect person."
Misleading companies does not end at insurance. A study from CIFAS found that falsehoods on applications for credit cards and loans rose by 12 per cent in the first half of 2008.
