Britons are planning to take more holidays this year, according to a recent survey.

A poll conducted by TripAdvisor found that around 70 per cent of UK residents expect to take a fortnight or more of holiday this year – up from 55 per cent last year.

Nearly one in five plan to take more than five weeks of holiday – up from 13 per cent last year, Travel Mole reports.

A third of respondents said they intend to take more holiday this year, while 14 per cent said they will be taking less.

And Britons are planning to spend more even despite the costs of fuel increasing along with air travel.

"It looks like we will be taking more time off and spending more money on our holidays this summer," said Ian Rumgay, TripAdvisor's European communications manager.

"The British love affair with the sun, sand and sangria continues unabated and warnings about exposure to the sun are being ignored. So it would appear are calls by the environmental lobby to cut down on air travel."

A number of new destinations are emerging as popular holiday hotspots, including Las Terrenas in the Dominican Republic and Los Suenos in Costa Rica.
