Britons are throwing caution to the wind and refusing to make a budget to stick to while on holiday, according to a new survey.

Research by the Post Office found that, with 48 per cent of holidaymakers making a budget but failing to stick to it, many are refusing to make one altogether and determined to splash their cash during their break.

It seems that the temptation of local cuisine while on holiday is causing Britons to overspend, while the cost of sightseeing is also taking its toll on UK holidaymakers' wallets.

Just one in five respondents said that they were able to stick to their budget, with these prudent holidaymakers most likely to be from the south-east.

The survey found that men are 50 per cent more likely than women to not set a spending budget for their holidays.

"If you do not have unlimited funds at your disposal – and not many of us do – it makes sense to set a spending limit, even when on holiday," said Kevin McAdam, head of travel at the Post Office.

"However, these figures prove that surprisingly few people do so."
