Some 43 per cent of Britons feel that a summer holiday is essential to maintaining their mental wellbeing, a new study has suggested.

According to Cater Allen, 17 per cent have said they live for their holidays, while 21 per cent start planning next year's break as soon as they return home.

In terms of ideal destinations, 57 per cent said they looked to countries and resorts that were off the traditional British tourist trail.

Further findings indicated that nearly a quarter (23 per cent) of people pay for their holidays using their monthly salary, while 15 per cent use credit cards to fund breaks.

Commenting, Richard Dunn, managing director at Cater Allen, said: "The rising cost of living and the higher price of fuel for flights means that this summer we may have to pay that little bit more for our much need rest."

Earlier research from the group has found that residents in the south-east spend the most on their summer holidays, although many resort to credit in doing so.

InsureandGo offers a host of travel insurance options to suit individual holiday habits.
