Britons are increasingly adventurous with their holidays, and the shift in tastes is bad news for the package deal but means more people are getting what they want.
Package holiday sales have slumped 14 per cent in the past four years, according to figures from the British Market Research Bureau, while the number of people planning their own exotic excursions has risen by ten per cent in the same period, the Times reports.
Taking matters into their own hands, Britons are eschewing traditional destinations in favour of far-flung foreign lands such as Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand, according to the newspaper.
"Whereas people previously were holidaying in Spain and Portugal, now people have more choice and may opt to travel to Poland, Estonia or Latvia instead," a spokesperson from the British Market Research Bureau said.
Although booking online can increase the ease and reduce the cost of people's holidays, travellers should not forget essentials like
travel insurance - especially when seeking more adventurous exploits than the traditional sun, sea and sand package.
