Buying
travel insurance earlier is a smart policy, as a new study by a travel insurance company has shown.
Almost one person in five of those surveyed in the report were found to have had travel for holidays they had booked cancelled close to the time of departure.
And close to 70 per cent of those who had had to change their plans at the last minute were able to claim some of their money back as long as they had bought cover a significant amount of time in advance.
Travellers who left it until the last minute, by buying insurance only the week before travel, were only able to get compensation about half the time.
For Saga chief executive Andrew Goodsell, the survey revealed the importance of getting insurance ahead of time and planning your holidays so as to avoid surprises.
The poll also found that a worryingly large number of Britons were uninformed about health insurance when abroad, with almost a third not knowing that the E11 form is no longer used.
Make sure to get travel insurance before departure.
