Although many Britons may be concerned about the impact of the current economic crisis on their purses, they can still do their bit for the environment without breaking the bank, Friends of the Earth has claimed.

The group explained that there are a number of simple methods which could help to reduce energy wastage and in turn lower fuel bills.

Marie Reynolds, a spokesperson for the environmental campaign group, said that making sure all appliances are turned off at the wall is one way of helping the planet without hurting the wallet.

Meanwhile, loft insulation will also help to keep the home warmer, she said.

She added that these and similar measures often do not require professional assistance.

"It's often a question of attitude change rather than getting the builders in - this means things like cutting down on resource use," Ms Reynolds concluded.

According to recent research by the Energy Savings Trust, 53 per cent of residents would be willing to pay more for green homes.
