The number of British holidaymakers travelling to South Africa is falling, The Telegraph has reported.

According to tour operator Africa Travel, holiday bookings for August were down between 20 per cent and 30 per cent on August last year.

Managing director of Africa Travel, Frances Geoghegan, commented, "After the World Cup we did a lot of promotions and people said they were discounting, but it just hasn’t worked.

"With the poor exchange rate and high air fares, South Africa is not a budget destination anymore.”"/p>

Figures from the Post Office's annual summer report also showed that in June, July and August of this year, sales of South African rand fell by 26 per cent compared to the same months in 2009.

A similar trend was also experienced by Travelex, which saw rand sales decrease by 48 per cent and 32 per cent in July and August 2010 respectively compared to last year's figures.

Worldwide travel insurance is available from InsureandGo for holidaymakers jetting across the globe.
