Britons will spend an additional £20,000 for a home that is in an ideal location, Halifax has suggested.

And in terms of where people would most like their property to be sited, it seems a countryside idyll is a dream for many, with nearly one in four (23 per cent) saying that proximity to the countryside was the most important factor in terms of location.

Meanwhile, 17 per cent place propinquity to their work premises as the principal consideration in the hunt for a prime location.

Gordon Edwards, managing director for Halifax Estate Agents, commented: "Although other factors such as budget, property specification and availability play an important part, most people begin their search for a home by looking at geographic location first."

Further research from Halifax released this week has shown that many parents are willing to pay a sizable premium for a house located near to a good state school.

For those who have found the house of their dreams, InsureandGo offers a host of home insurance options.
