Failing to take out
travel insurance before heading to the US could result in holidaymakers facing a six-figure sum.
Elderly people's charity Age Concern explains that the US is the most expensive destination in which an accident can occur, based on real-world travel insurance claims.
In the year to June 2009, the highest claim the charity reports seeing was for £117,000 after one traveller suffered heart failure while on holiday.
The US also ranked second-highest with a fee of £107,000 for the treatment of a fractured spine.
Israel completes the top three, with a real-life travel insurance claim made for nearly £79,000 of medical costs associated with treating a broken hip and wrist.
However, it is not only travellers who head abroad whose insurance could cover them against losses.
Domestic breaks can be protected by extending home contents insurance to cover possessions taken away on trips, the charity previously advised.
