More than a million Britons are living with unfinished DIY and home renovation projects, according to home insurance provider Halifax.

According to the group, 1.7 million UK residents have had such a task on hold for two years or more, with bedrooms identified as the most commonly unfinished rooms.

Meanwhile, almost 250,000 people have relegated a DIY project to the bottom of to-do lists for more than ten years.

Respondents to the study identified time and financial constraints as the principal reasons for leaving tasks unfinished.

David Rochester, head of underwriting at Halifax Home Insurance, said: "Budgeting effectively for the financial cost of completing a DIY project and being realistic about the time it will take to complete it can save significant heartache."

Employing professional tradesmen to complete work was also recommended.

In March, Halifax reported that a third of all UK males in a relationship felt pressurised by their partners to carry out DIY tasks, with 37 per cent of people stating that they disliked doing them.
