Britons rack up billions of miles on their holidays as they enjoy getting behind the wheel during their free time, according to new research.

A new study by Halifax Travel showed that Britons drive about 15 billion miles each year collectively, at an average of 861 miles per motorist.

Nearby Europe was the most popular driving destination for holidaymakers, with about 17.5 million Brits having undertaken a driving holiday in the past calendar year.

In total, the bank's researchers estimated that Brits made around 600,000 journeys across the globe in the past year.

And spokesman Paul Birkhead argued that the movies were partly the reason behind this temptation to get on the road.

'From Easy Rider to Road Trip, popular culture has glamorised heading out on the open road.

'Millions of Britons have been inspired to hit the highway and embrace the freedom provided by a holiday road trip,' he said.
