Some of the world's most famous tourist destinations are leaving British travellers cold, a new survey has shown.

New research by Virgin Travel revealed that British tourists were left unimpressed after their visits to the Louvre and the pyramids.

Among the list of the top most disappointing sites was another Parisian classic, the Eiffel Tower, which was named the biggest disappointment of all.

Those surveyed mentioned the long queues as well as the difficulty of getting to the top as reasons for Paris' most famous monument failing to live up to expectations.

Two New York hotspots, Times Square and the Statue of Liberty, as well as Las Ramblas in Barcelona, rounded off the top five.

Brits might just be looking for something different, as the top ten must-see sights revealed less classic names such as the Masai Mara in Kenya and Sydney's Harbour Bridge.

In Britain, Stonehenge, the Angel of the North and Blackpool Tower were at the top of the most disappointing sites.

But Alnwick Castle in Northumberland, Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge in Country Antrim and the Royal Crescent of Bath were named the top three most pleasant surprises in the country.
