Britons would prefer to travel abroad rather than "going green" and holidaying within the UK, according to a new poll reported by travel website travelmole.com.

The cost of holidays in the UK and the poor weather were the two main drivers pushing Britons away this summer, a survey of close to 2,000 adults by website YouGov indicated.

Close to 25 per cent of those surveyed commented that if the UK were cheaper for basic holiday necessities like food, drinks and accommodation they would consider keeping their holidays inland to reduce their carbon footprint.

About half of those polled reported simply that holidaying in the UK was simply too expensive for them.

UK residents travelling abroad increased in the past year in spite of environmental worries.

Popular southern locations like Cornwall and Devon were among the places seen as most overpriced by holidaymakers.

Other reasons given for the unpopularity of UK tourism was that there were not as many things to do, as argued one sixth of those surveyed.

Mike Holliday-Williams, managing director of More Than, which originally commissioned the poll, said holiday operators should come up with new ways to entice UK residents to stay and enjoy their home country.
