Britons carry out alterations and improvements to their homes every five years, new research has suggested.

A study for Saga Home Insurance has also indicated that two out of three people were unaware that their insurance provider may require notification while work is being carried out as it may impose limitations to their cover.

Saga advises homeowners to contact their insurer to keep them abreast of any major DIY developments as many policies do not provide cover for uninstalled bathroom suites, unassembled kitchen cabinets and unsecured building materials.

Bathrooms, kitchens and bedrooms were identified as the rooms that are most likely to undergo changes, the provider states.

Abbey recently advised consumers to avoid risking a home insurance claim be ensuring that they were aware of risks associated with using additional heating appliances in the bedroom this winter.

Whether planning to carry out home improvements in the near future or not, consumers may find that they can obtain a competitive home insurance deal from InsureandGo.
