Nine and a half days is the perfect amount of time to go on holiday, according to new research from Halifax.

According to the survey, Britons start longing for home not long after, with 9.4 days being the average time when nostalgia sets in.

The survey found that travellers on a two-week break often yearn to get back well before their time is up, with almost one million holidaymakers wanting to return only four days into their holiday.

Men claimed to be less homesick than women, with half of those polled reporting they don't miss home at all, compared to less than 40 per cent for women.

The Welsh were the most likely to miss home, with close to half reporting wanting to go back when on two-week holidays

One cure for homesickness is to take part of home with you, which is the solution for many travellers – about a third take their CDs and music, a fifth are likely to carry family photographs with them, and a tenth make themselves comfortable with their own pillow and DVDs.

And of course there is tea, which is a necessity for about half of Britons whatever their destination.
