Many UK travellers are still looking to take out holiday insurance and visit the iconic Route 66 in the US, it has been claimed.

Stella Clery-Ackland, UK representative for the USTA - the United States Travel Association - and DiscoverAmerica.com, said the destination is the inspiration for many holidaymakers to get themselves in gear and take a trip across the pond.

"Destinations vary year to year and while Florida and New York are always very popular, emerging destinations such as Utah, Missouri, Louisiana, Texas and Rocky Mountain states are seeing double digit visitor growth," she commented.

According to holiday booking figures released by online travel agent sunshine.co.uk, Spain is no longer as popular as it once was, while the US is becoming a more desirable place to go on holiday.

The website noted the country has seen bookings almost double in the last month and 48 per cent of people said they would cross the pond just to try and meet a celebrity.

InsureandGo offers holiday insurance for anyone planning a trip to the US.
