A large proportion of Britons still believe that their E111 form will cover them if they have an injury while abroad, new research has shown.
Data from money comparison site moneysupermarket.com has revealed that close to 60 per cent of Britons think that the E111 form provides cover for holidays abroad.
In fact, the E111 was replaced by the European Health Insurance Card in July of last year.
And a further 42 per cent also think that their NHS patient card can also be used to receive medical treatment, a figure the website deemed 'staggering'.
'It is astonishing that nearly two years after the card has been phased in, awareness has stayed alarmingly low,' said Richard Mason, director of insurance for the website.
Medical treatment in mainland Europe doesn't come cheap and holidaymakers stand to lose out and suffer unexpected financial pain.'
Mr Mason also warned that the European Health Insurance Card, like the E111 before it, shouldn't be seen as a replacement for more comprehensive medical treatment cover.
