A concerted effort is being made to promote the UK as an attractive destination to tourists.
Mary Rance, chief executive of UKinbound, said VisitBritain has launched a new campaign aimed at making ten of the most popular cities in the UK as attractive as possible to visitors.
She commented: "We also welcome the variety and range of great destinations which ... we know will encourage visitors to experience and enjoy some of the best tourism products that the UK has to offer."
Ms Rance added the initiative is set to paint the UK as a value for money destination, with a focus being on low-cost travel to the country and the range of attractions available once holidaymakers arrive.
According to figures from PKF Hotel Consultancy Services, in London, Christmas and new year festivities meant occupancy increased year-on-year by 5.3 per cent during December.
Furthermore, Cardiff, Leeds and Manchester all achieved increases in occupancy in December, but their room rates all decreased year-on-year which meant room yields were down.
