British homeowners could be getting a shock in the event of bad weather, after a survey revealed that 65 per cent of people feel they are not well enough prepared to deal with the consequences of a flood in their property.

Figures from Zurich home insurance, cited by the Fair Investment Company, suggest that 44 per cent of respondents are unsure whether their home insurance policy protects them against damage caused by floods.

Also, 40 per cent of people admitted that they do not know who to go to for information and advice on how much their home may be at risk of flooding.

Property claims director at Zurich, Anna Fleming, said that it was "more important than ever" for people to have the right insurance, pointing out the "unpredictable nature" of the UK weather.

The BBC recently reported that nine schools in Gloucestershire were given a share of £1.6 million to try and prevent further flooding of their premises, after last year's summer floods wreaked havoc in the county.
