Brits are more likely to give up buying household items so that they can get travel insurance and go on a holiday, it has been claimed.

People are also becoming more realistic about how much they can spend on a holiday which could leave more money to spend on the right holiday insurance policy.

Spokesperson for ABTA - The Travel Association Frances Tuke said that travellers were thinking more about what they needed to spend on a break and were willing to cut back on spending on items such as new sofas or cars.

Furthermore, Ms Tuke commented that in real terms, costs of trips away had fallen since the 70s and 80s.

Research from Visit London and Visit Britain shows that Brits are planning to cut back on spending on food, fuel, clothes and "little luxuries".

In total, 80 per cent said they were willing to cut expenditure on food to save money.
