British travellers have been warned to take better care of their passports and personal documents when abroad.

A new poll by finance specialist has revealed that 20 per cent of travellers did not take the proper precautions to hide their passports when abroad.

Close to half of all holidaymakers don't use the safes provided at hotels, the company's research further revealed.

And about a third of all tourists keep their passport with them at all times, even though this exposes them to the danger of pickpockets prevalent in all tourist hotspots.

The survey was carried out on over 2,300 adults and conducted by website YouGov.

"Holidays are a relaxing and enjoyable time, but can also be a time when we forget basic safety rules that we'd always follow when at home," said Sanjiv Yajnik, Capital One managing director to inthenews.co.uk.

The credit card provider recommended travellers take certain precautions before leaving the UK: to inform their bank when planning to be in the UK for a lengthy period of time, to use the safe boxes in hotels, and to make two photocopies of their passports before leaving.

Another key safety measure is to take out travel insurance – call InsureandGo or check online for great value deals.
