The BBC hit reality show the Apprentice has spurred many Britons to consider leaving their job behind and start their own business, according to Direct Line.

In a recent study carried out by the group, it was revealed that 18 per cent of viewers who watch the show realised that they wanted to "go it alone", while a further 12 per cent said that they wanted to "be their own boss".

Meanwhile, 13 per cent of those interviewed said that they felt that they could do a better job than the show's competitors in managing business operations.

However, Kate Syred, head of Direct Line for Business, noted that starting a commercial venture requires additional responsibilities that should not be overlooked.

"Being your own boss means taking responsibility for any number of things from equipment such as computers, phones and broadband connections to public liability," she commented.

Online resource Brand Republic reported last month that 7.4 million people tuned in to watch the fifth episode of the show, which saw contestants attempting to sell ice cream.

InsureandGo offers commercial insurance for those considering starting their own business venture.
